Hello,

It has been a slow summer/early autumn in the Arthur Shilling household. I have remained busy: job searching, raising a young gentleman, building a chicken run, working on Cleaves Journal &c.... All this has left Arthur Shilling in the dark.

I've had far more submissions of manuscripts recently than books bought. I hope this will change when the Autumn Series is released in early November. I will be working hard this week to get the books finished. It's a lengthy process, handcutting each A4 page into 4, and getting the binding to work. For this reason, the Autumn series will be a bit more expensive than the usual Arthur Shilling's cheap cheeriness.

Details of the Autumn Series will be released later this week.

Arthur Shilling's Birthday has been/is coming up.

The first title, 'The Benholm Potato Growers' by yours truly was printed at the beginning of May last year. While I count this as the ignition for the beginning of the Arthur Shilling Press with the first batch of titles released at the end of June 09, I don't usually count TBPG as a title. I will be releasing it as part of the back-catalogue though, so I guess it should be counted as a title, as a consequence we've missed the arthur shilling birthday!

All is quite quiet on the south-western front, I am busying myself sorting out the back-catalogue and bullying people into letting me publish them.

I have moved in & settled. While activities will be limited - baby is imminent - I am now accepting submissions for the next range of Arthur Shilling publications. I will be publishing 6 new booklets in the Autumn featuring (hopefully) woodcut cover art as well as the pocket-sized mini versions.

Due to a couple of requests I will also be making the entire Arthur Shilling back-catalogue available to buy (both as a collection & individually).

Joseph Mack Stohlman grew up in Reading and Cambridge, New England. He is currently writing things in England and likes this because it makes him feel older. He enjoys watching trees and escaping from mental states of distress. I heard that one time he lost all knowledge of the meaning of the word "excellent", but there are too many rumours about him to believe them all. If he met you, he probably thinks you're a nice person.

There are only 4 copies of Neil Addison's Irma Kite left.

So far, all printing costs for all chapbooks have been covered - except for the big printer purchase - of which there is still £150 to earn back. Once this is paid off, the chapbooks can be even cheaper!

The Arthur Shilling Press was set up in May 2009 when Harry Godwin printed his own chapbook 'The Benholm Potato Growers'. He then bullied his comrades Linus Slug, Nat Raha & Michael Zand into providing sequences. Richard Barrett got there first with 'Pig Fervour'.

The Arthur Shilling Press intends to be a prolific publisher of short, innovative poetry sequences within the UK, helping newer poets to get publications under their belt, and, perhaps, the experienced poets an outlet to try something different.

Neil Addison was living in a library with his canny parents when Sir Andrew Motion bit him at the age of 5 (the consequent bug was thoroughgoing). If Neil is not writing poetry then he’s watching hit tv and learning how to listen to the ghosts of hip-hop living inside his head (although he is best friends with Professor Griff, he does not condone the protocols of Huggy Bear). He sees the role of poet as a fast one (He started poetry on the Monday; Friday he was opening for Albert Ayler at The Ormskirk Civic Hall). Writing a poem is like a main source of income. He relishes the traditional and formal use of high-profile admirers. I love how writing is about those moments when you are easily mistaken for a pop-star, he said.
He is well-versed in Oxford and now he studies London instead.

Michael Zand was born in Tehran, grew up in London, and he now lives in Reading. His work has a penchant for the frayed edges of language, the places where tongues get tied with each other and where, sometimes, something new emerges. He has read at a number of poetry events and participated in various collaborations with musicians and sound artists. His poems have featured in various innovative magazines and cultural websites. He is currently working on a new narrative piece which looks at the relationship between geography, linguistic identity and emotional loss. He is a research student at Roehampton University, where he won the 2008 poetry performance prize.
